Norelgestromin
What's the lowdown?
Norelgestromin is a progestogen (synthetic progesterone) used in contraception
It can be found in the hormonal patch, combined with ethinyl estradiol
Norelgestromin has minimal androgenic activity
The patch is changed every week for 3 weeks, followed by a patch-free week
Norelgestromin was first made available in 20021, and is used in the hormonal patch alongside ethinyl estradiol, a synthetic oestrogen.
How does it work?
When used in combination with ethinyl estradiol, norelgestromin prevents ovulation, thickens the cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to enter the womb and thins the lining of the womb to prevent a fertilised egg from implanting2. This method is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy 3.
The patch is to be changed every 3 weeks, followed by a week without it (called the ‘treatment-free’ week). Norelgestromin is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and after 48 hours a therapeutic level is maintained. This level remains while the patch is worn 4.

Is it androgenic?
Yes – it’s androgenic, however, it has very low-androgenic activities, basically negligible 5. However, the Norelgestromin does produce Levonorgestrel as an active metabolite in the blood which has androgenic activity 4.

How to use the patch?
It is important to use the patch correctly to ensure it maintains contraceptive effect 6:
- Ensure you thoroughly clean your hands with soap and water before applying the patch to your skin
- Find an area of clean dry skin, either on your tummy, upper body, upper arms or buttocks
- Apply the patch to the area you desire and hold it down for 10 seconds
- The next time you apply the patch follow the same directions as above but choose a different location
It is best to avoid applying the patch to broken, injured or cut skin.
What are norelgestromin side effects?
As norelgestromin is only available to take in combination with ethinyl estradiol, it’s impossible to say which side effects are caused by which hormone or the combination. Side effects for norelgestromin taken alongside ethinyl estradiol in the combined pill may include 7,8:
- Breast tenderness or enlargement
- Mood changes
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Increase in blood pressure
- Skin irritation
