Why is symptom tracking and understanding your cycle pattern important?

These days we live busy lives with jam-packed schedules and can easily forget things ….like when your period is due. How many of us have had to resort to toilet paper in our knickers?

Apps that track your cycle can offer you gentle reminders when your period is due so you can stock up on necessities like period products, chocolate and pain-killers. And they nudge you to be kind to yourself during your busy days.

Period tracking can also be important for the general management of your social life. Just ask Alice, our CEO, who realised she was due on her period on her wedding day (one reason women book to speak to our doctors). And it’s useful if you need to consider delaying your period for a holiday.

Furthermore, the menstrual cycle is so much more than just a period. Tracking your cycle offers information about your body and overall health, and can give us indications when something is not quite right.

By tracking your symptoms, you will be able to establish what is normal for you and build a cycle health record over time. This will allow you to understand patterns and notice when something’s not normal. Noting all your symptoms and experiences down will also allow you to better advocate for yourself when something doesn’t feel right.

Tracking your cycle is so important to help get a diagnosis of conditions such as endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and perimenopause. You will have all the information at your fingertips so you can show your doctor what’s happening. Having an awareness of your symptoms and triggers throughout your cycle can also be a great tool for managing these conditions.

What is Clue?

Clue took the world by storm when they first launched in 2013, offering women a new and innovative way to track their periods on their phones. Gone are the days where we write everything down on a notepad. Clue started their journey with menstrual cycle tracking but have now expanded into perimenopause, trying to conceive and even pregnancy.

The standard version of the Clue app offers period and ovulation tracking as well as limited pregnancy features all in one place. The more information you log in the app, the better the algorithm gets at giving you individual insights about your cycle. According to Clue, data from your last 12 cycles will create predictions around your cycle, period length and symptoms of PMS.1 There are over 200+ symptom tracking options that you can log over your cycle not just including menstrual flow but also your mood, skin and energy levels. All important indicators for your overall health.

As with most app products, there is a free version and paid version, which is called Clue Plus. But the question is…..is Clue Plus worth it?

What is Clue Plus?

Clue Plus is the paid version of the Clue app that offers you access to differing modes, more content and deeper tracking analysis. You still have access to several features with the standard free Clue app, but Clue Plus will be able to give you further predictions and insights into your health. You also get access to Clue Conceive, Clue Pregnancy, Clue Perimenopause, and Clue Connect included in your Clue Plus subscription.

How much does a Clue Plus subscription cost?

Clue Plus offers a monthly or yearly subscription option. So if you want to give Clue Plus a try for just a month, you have no obligation to continue; however, if you know you love it, you can secure a year-long subscription for cheaper (£24.99 in the UK, which works out at just over £2 per month).
We always love a try before you buy, and Clue has given all Lowdown users an exclusive 100% off the first 12 months of your Clue Plus subscription. Just use the code LowdownxClue to redeem. FYI: this will renew at full price after 12 months, but you can cancel at any time, more details here.

Clue Plus and Oura Ring

The Oura Ring is a health-tracking wearable ring that measures various biometric data, such as heart rate, temperature, sleep patterns, and activity levels. The Oura Ring can now be paired with the Clue app to offer seamless tracking.

Temperature tracking can be especially useful as the Oura Ring tracks your temperature which is an important indicator of ovulation and can help identify your current cycle phase. Along with temperature tracking, the Oura Ring also tracks your sleep quality and other physiological data (like heart rate variability), which can be important indicators of overall health and reproductive wellness. The combination of sleep, heart rate, and temperature data can give you a better picture of your overall health too.

This feature is only available with a Clue Plus and Oura Ring subscription. The Oura Ring itself has a relatively high up-front cost starting at around £349.

If this is something you are interested in but has left you umming and ahhing due to the large up-front costs, Clue can offer you an exclusive discount on your Oura Ring purchase and membership.7

Clue does also integrate with Apple Health, but doesn’t yet allow integration of other common health tracking wearables like the Apple Watch or Garmins into their app.

What are the benefits of Clue Plus?

While Clue already offers a fair bit with their free version, these features multiply with Clue Plus.

As this app mainly relies on the data you input, you want to be diligent and disciplined with logging into the app as the algorithm thrives on what you feed it. Luckily for us, Clue has reminders you can customise, fast-tracking options and daily check-ins to make sure this isn’t a problem.

Your decision on Clue Plus should be based on how much you will use these additional features to analyse and understand your body and reproductive health. Some might find them simply too overwhelming while others love the depth of understanding about their body. If you have, or suspect you might have endometriosis, PMS or PMDD the extra tracking features could be amazingly helpful.

There are multiple different women’s health tracking apps on the market these days, all some variation of each other. You might gel with one more than the other so it is important to try them out for yourself. We think Clue Plus is a great investment into your health, especially if you have a gynaecological condition, are trying to conceive or potentially in the perimenopause phase of life.

Clue has given Lowdown readers an exclusive 100% off your first 12 months of your Clue Plus membership so you can explore it fully for yourself.
